Please pardon me. It is hard not to sound like am soliciting. I have been in the US for about 22 years. Born and raised in poor, rural Uganda, I did my Engineering undergarduate studies on scholarship in China, came for my graduate studies in the US. Since I came to the US, Uganda has become a more politically stable, economically properous country, but my people in rural Butaleja District, Eastern Uganda have become only poorer, more sick, more hungry, and the list of problems goes on and on. I was raised by a christian rural school headmaster and have always known through that experience that education is the basic foundation necessary for dealing with problems such as those my Butaleja District people are facing. In addition, through my first hand experience, I appreciate the vital role that women play in the upbringing and welfare of families. I am in the process of starting an initiative geared toward helping to educate children – particularly girls – in my native Butaleja. Planned efforts include a campaign to educate parents on the importance of educating girls, raising scholarship money to help families take their daughters to school, raising money to help buy text books and other school supplies and raising money to help construct a ‘model’ girls elementary/secondary school in Butaleja District to provide same quality education to the rural poor kids as that enjoyed by children of the ‘well-to-do’ in urban cities in Uganda.

I know this is not the right forum for my message, but the above photograph radiates the kind of hope that I would like to help pass on to my people. Any advice or guidance on how or whether the Oprah Winfrey foundation could assist me in my efforts would be most appreciated.

    Joshua
